[edit] Introduction
Aurikku is a fan-made term which describes any fanwork featuring Auron and Rikku, two characters from Final Fantasy X, as a couple. It is both a well loved and taboo romantic pairing, with Auron being a significantly older male and Rikku a younger teenager.
[edit] About
Auron, one of the main protagonists of Final Fantasy X, is a stoic, wise and weary ronin, who lost much in life and works solely for duty. Rikku another character, is his polar opposite, a bubbly, energetic and earnest girl who devotes herself to saving her cousin and another main protagonist of the game, Yuna.
The contrast in personalities is a popular lure for fans of the pairing, with both characters tempering the flaws of the other and balancing one another, for example Auron's patience to Rikku's impetus, or his weariness to her love of life.
Many Yuffentine fans made the jump to the Aurikku fandom upon the release of FFX, most likely because the two couples share some remarkable similarities. Therefore, the BNFs of one of the fandoms can often be found in the other.
Many talented authors have written stories for this fandom, and the contrast of interpretations of the pairing have led to varied stories and in depth characterizations.
Arguably the best known story, Gabi-hime's The Shape of His Heart, is uniquely vocal and often humorous. rr1963's Soldier of Spira is lengthy, dramatic and action based, with a large portion of the story devoted to political intrigue and the onset of war. It also follows the chronicles of the game itself rather closely. Gaurdian1's The Naked Dead and Her takes place after the games ending. Glass Mermaid's Bleak is a descriptive, bitter outlook on the pairing. Enkida's Memento Vivere encapsulates the Final Fantasy X sequel, X-2.
While some of the best known stories in the fandom are unfinished, the Aurikku fandom continues to be quite active, especially on the fanfiction site Fanfiction.net
