User:Emufarmers/Hosting move
From Fan History Wiki
We have moved from SiteGround to SliceHost. I apologize for not giving any advance warning of this move; we had expected that it would take a few weeks to prepare for the move, but everything was mostly set up a day after we purchased the new hosting and there didn't seem to be any reason to delay the inevitable.
Page load times have decreased measurably, and stability seems pretty rock-solid with our new host. Most functionality should be restored, but let me know if anything doesn't work. —Emufarmers 10:40, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- I have also implemented proper short URLs. Articles are now accessible through /wiki/Foo instead of /index.php/Foo, and actions are now performed through /w/index.php?title=Foo&action=edit instead of /index.php?title=Foo&action=edit. Existing index.php/Foo links from elsewhere will redirect to /wiki/Foo, although existing /index.php?title=Foo&action=edit links will just appear the same as their corresponding /w/index.php?title=Foo&action=edit links. Internal links have updated themselves automatically. —Emufarmers 13:34, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Technical notes of the move
Editing was disabled for about eight hours, from 10AM to 6PM EST (once I dumped the database, any edits made before the DNS changes propagated would have been lost, had they been permitted). Moving the database and files only took a few hours, but nameserver records seem to have a default TTL of 24 hours (the nameservers still point to SG!); if I had been smarter, I would have lowered the TTL in advance, but changing the A record at SG to point to the new host mostly ameliorated my lack of foresight.
