Based on a series of three video games by Monolith Soft, with game scripts originally by Soraya Saga and Tetsuya Takahashi.

The game features an ensemble cast, dealing with the trials of six main characters and several minor ones. The game is also known for copious references to various religions, namely Christianity.

Because Xenosaga is believed to be a spinoff of (and contains many references to) the game Xenogears, fanfiction for the Xenosaga series was previously archived on FanFiction.net in the Xenogears category.

Xenosaga fanfiction is mainly comprised of het pairings, with a small percentage of slash and an even smaller percentage of saffic. The fandom also contains a large number of high school AU stories, most of them centering around the character MOMO and her pursuit of Jr.

The fandom is fairly small, and most authors in the fandom choose to "specialize" in a certain character. A few authors have become known for the characters they choose to specialize in, and are associated with that character fandom-wide.

Xenosaga is also infamous within its fandom for the number of alternate pairings that it's created. Authors who "specialize" in a certain pairing also are associated with that pairing fandom-wide.

Below is a partial list of terminology used in the Xenosaga fan community.

• Alternate pairings are pairings of two characters that are not story canon. This type of pairing is currently very popular in the Xenosaga fandom.
• URTVcest is any fanfic that involves a pairing of two or more of the URTVs or their creator, Dmitri Yuriev.
• Canon pairing refers to any pairing that is, or can be construed to be, considered as confirmed by the series. Canon pairings include Shion/Allen, Jin/Pellegri, and to some extents KOS-MOS/chaos, MOMO/Jr. and Juli/Ziggy.
